Blendology – Functional Teas Review

blendology

Blendology is a company I haven’t heard of before but was contacted by to do a review. After some quick snooping I found their blends and idea rather interesting. At present they only do three blends: Sleep, Energy and Recover. Each one contains herbs that are 100% Organic to create effective blends that can be used for it’s purpose.

Blendology say that “We’ve spent the last three years working alongside a team of herbalists and nutritionists to develop our three functional teas. Over this time we’ve experimented with thousands of different combinations of herbs until we got the blends just right“.

Together with a specialist in Somerset we source the highest quality herbs and teas from around the world {all Soil Association Certified Organic} which are then blended under controlled conditions according to our specifications. These blends are then hand packed at The Tea Factory in Gloucestershire where 3.5 grammes of the blend goes into each fuso bag {which is nearly double the industry standard}.”

Recover

‘A handcrafted blend of herbs chosen for their detoxifying properties to help you recover from a fast paced lifestyle’.

Ingredients: Nettle Leaf, Peppermint Leaf, Burdock Root, Dandelion Root and Artichoke Leaf.

Notes: This is Organic and the packaging shows the certification, also this blend is caffeine free.

Green colour tag.

Tea bag appearance: Fine ground herbs with some medium sized, fluffy pieces. Some are so small they fall through the bag, which is see through and easy to look at it’s contents.

Tea bag scent: Herbal with a delicate peppermint hint.

Steeping Instructions: None are given on the packaging but knowing this is herbal I will use boiling water for approx 5-7 minutes. Also, a quick note to say the teabag string is a little short and needs to be tied around the handle to stop the bag from fully submerging, string and all.

Once steeped a brown liquid is the result with a soft, sweet mint scent and a touch of mixed herbs in the background.

In flavour this is full bodied with noticeable peppermint and burdock flavours. A subtle sweetness but thick herbal after taste with dark burdock tartness. As it cools the herbs don’t increase in strength and it remains easy to drink with it’s sweetness, the mint having a creamy feel against the dark, wooden burdock.

It’s herbal and while not a fan this blend is not offensive in strength nor flavour and is a little different given it’s rather strong burdock after taste. The mint is not strong enough to be called a mint tea but it does leave that slightly refreshing taste in my mouth. However, this is not a tea that necessarily requires to taste nice, it’s a functional tea after all. In terms of it having detoxifying capabilities I will not know for the time being, though I do understand that nettle is a diuretic and peppermint is good for aiding digestion.

Energy

‘A handcrafted blend of herbs chosen for their stimulating properties to help keep you energised and focused’.

Ingredients: Green tea, Yerba Mate, Gingko Biloba, Ginseng and Gotu Kola.

Notes: This is Organic and the packaging shows the certification, also this blend contains caffeine.

Orange colour tag.

Tea bag appearance: A mixture of finely ground and loosely chopped pieces in a see through teabag.

Tea bag scent: Thickly herbal but with some sweetness from the ginseng.

Steeping Instructions: None are given on the packaging but knowing this contains green tea I will use water just under boiling for approx 3-5 minutes. Also, a quick note to say the teabag string is a little short and needs to be tied around the handle to stop the bag from fully submerging, string and all.

Once steeped a green brown liquid is the result with a mild sweet grass scent.

In flavour this is sweet and soft, somewhat matching it’s scent. There is also a honey like quality about it from the ginseng. It’s not bitter nor herbal tasting but it does have some dryness in the after taste but it doesn’t linger for too long. The green tea itself is noticeable but it’s not bold so I think it would be suitable for those that are new to green tea or perhaps are not overly keen on it.

So, an energy tea…frankly I am all for more energy! Despite it being a tea bag I found this one pleasant in flavour and ease to brew. It’s sweetness was not overly strong but subtle enough to be refreshing and leave a pleasant (though short lived) after taste. Again, with a name like energy this tea is more than just something to taste nice. Green tea is well known for having energy boosting properties though it seems it doesn’t work for everyone after reading through a few forums. Personally I do feel a little change, I mean I couldn’t run a marathon but I feel focused and ready to tackle my goal list for today. Than in itself is an improvement from my zombie like state pre tea. I have a feeling it’s too early to say yet but hopefully my energy will increase slightly throughout the day.

Sleep

‘A handcrafted blend of herbs chosen for their sleep inducing properties to help you de-stress and relax at the end of the day’.

Ingredients: Chamomile Flower, Passion Flower, Linden Flower, Valerian Root and California Poppy.

Notes: This is Organic and the packaging shows the certification, also this blend is caffeine free.

Blue colour tag.

Tea bag appearance: A mixture of finely ground and loosely chopped pieces in a see through teabag. Some pieces are fine enough to come through the bag.

Tea bag scent: Herbal and sweet with chamomile tones.

Steeping Instructions: None are given on the packaging but knowing this is herbal I will use boiling water for approx 5-7 minutes. Also, a quick note to say the teabag string is a little short and needs to be tied around the handle to stop the bag from fully submerging, string and all.

Once steeped a golden brown liquid is the result with a thick and sweet chamomile scent.

In flavour this is sweet and thick with dominant chamomile tones, which matches the steeped scent. There is a floral undertone which lightens the chamomile and leaves a soft sweetness in the after taste. Unfortunately I cannot pin point any other ingredient in the flavour other than the chamomile which is a little disappointing.

blendology11

I am thankful that this blend does not have lavender, as a lot of sleep inducing blends seem to have now a days. I am however, disappointed that this just tasted like a chamomile tea. While I neither dislike nor like chamomile (I see it as being inoffensive) I was hoping for the other ingredients to shine through. Other than a mild and undetermined floral hue toward the after taste there is no evidence of the other ingredients. As mentioned again with the previous two, this is a blend that is not necessarily about the taste. In terms of feeling sleepy I can say at the minimum I feel calm and relaxed, but not ready for sleep yet. But for someone that suffers from insomnia it was always a lot to ask for a tea to send me sleepy.

Rating: 7/10

Overall: I had a nice introduction to Blendology and their ideal (which I admire), not to mention the ability to try three new blends. Energy was my favourite blend in terms of effect and taste and throughout all three I found the ingredients good quality, especially in terms of tea bags. I look forward to seeing any new blends in the future, I feel this company has more to offer than they do at present. For my drinking experiences I am going to rate this company and it’s blends (Blendology as a whole) as 8/10. I see them being better than supermarket blends and nicer than most speciality teas found in health food shops. They were not perfect but are still above average and I do recommend them to anyone wanting to give them a try.
